The 2017 Geneva Auto Show has traditionally been about performance and luxury. At CardinaleWay Hyundai, we are excited that the FE Fuel Cell was presented at the auto show. The FE Fuel Cell concept is not Hyundai’s first foray into designing hydrogen-fueled cars. As recently as 2016, Hyundai was offering eco-friendly leases on a zero-emission Tucson Fuel Cell in certain parts of California and other markets. While the Tucson Fuel Cell could cover a maximum of 265 miles and hit 62 miles per hour in 12.5 seconds, the FE concept improves on one of those areas in a significant way.
Single Fill Fuel Cell Performance
The FE’s fuel cell stack is even more power dense than current designs and its hydrogen system is 20 percent lighter and 10 percent more efficient. Due to this improvement, Hyundai claims this concept can cover 497 miles on a single fill of hydrogen. This results in almost twice the range of a Tucson Fuel Cell. A workable, wide-spread hydrogen infrastructure is still needed, but automakers are interested in exploring this kind of performance in hydrogen.
Integrated Charging Space
The Hyundai FE Fuel Cell has an integrated charging space for an electric scooter in the trunk. The FE concept includes desirable portable battery packs that users can recharge in the vehicle plus use to charge their accessories.
Inspired by Water
In full auto show fashion, Hyundai described the design of the vehicle as “inspired by nature and water” with “flowing bodywork.” The handsome style is inspiring future products from the Korean company, perhaps even a successor to the Tucson Fuel Cell.
